Craft Interview
• Describe your style simply.
I'm a designer with a retro/pop feel to my work. I screenprint most of my designs.
• What do you buy at the art supply store?
I buy a lot of screenprinting ink as well as rubylith which is and old fasion way to cut color seperations by hand.I buy lots of pens and often a book or two on a new designer or artist.
• What technical problems intrigue you?
In screen printing its all a thinking game. You must really study your color idea first to understand what is going to overlap what. Also getting colors to match up the way you want is tricky and requires some practice.
• Among your own work, what is your favorite piece? Where is it now?
Thats a tough one but I really enjoy the poster I designend for Jim Carroll for an AS220 event. It took my work a step further I think. It hangs on the walls of whomever bought one.The run was 100 and pretty much sold out.
• What impressions do you want others to take from your work?
Alot of the work I do is screen printed concert posters. It's an art form that really rides the fine line between fine art and advertising design. It acts as both because it is used to advertise but it is also designed and printed by hand and hung in gallerys and museums.Decide for yourself.
• Where/how can others view and purchase your work?
The work is avaiable for sale at philaarts.com under the Cardoso gallery.Work will also be avaiable at a show at the Bush Gallery in Providence in september.
• What are the sources of courage?
I'm pretty much starting out so it's always scarce and I'm used to it.HA HA ! Really though it's all about trusting yourself and your work and not giving up.There is always going to be the tough times but there are always the good things that happen as well.Learn to balance them and always hope for the best.If you quit there will always be the what If? that will haunt you.
• Anything else you want to say? Say it here...
I'm an illustrator & graphic designer it pays the bills so if your interested in my work (check out philaarts.com for poster samples)I can send you a sample package or set up a meeting if your interested in using me for a project. Thanks!
